OIP News - Are You Hands Free?
Studies show that a driver using a cell phone is 4 times more likely to be in an accident than a driver focused on the road.
With the arrival of nicer weather, more people are getting back on the roads. It’s time for a refresher on Ontario’s hands free driving policy, introduced in October of 2009.
The province of Ontario became the fourth Canadian province to ban the use of cell phones while driving, joining Quebec, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. The law restricts talking, texting, typing, dialling, or emailing while driving – which includes when you are stopped at a red light. The only exception is for calling 911 in the event of an emergency.
GPS devices are allowed, as long as they are securely attached to your dashboard and do not interfere with your ability to see.
Following the introduction of this law, many drivers have adopted a hands free device. These devices can either be worn on the driver’s ear or plugged into the vehicle’s sound system. While the use of a hands free device is legally permitted, it is important to note that talking while driving presents a serious distraction that can impact your attention behind the wheel. As a general rule, it is best to keep your focus on the road and keep cell phone discussions to a minimum.
If you do receive a ticket for driving while using a hand held device, in addition to a hefty fine, this ticket may impact your insurance rates.
Remember – there is no substitute for paying attention when behind the wheel. Be safe out there!
