Xylitol: Sugar Substitute Dangerous for Pets

OVMA cautions pet owners about xylitol, an artificial sweetener commonly used in baked goods, candy, sugar-free products and oral-care products, which can cause serious health problems if ingested by pets.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Animal Poison Control Centre (ASPCA APCC), xylitol can cause vomiting, a sudden drop in blood pressure leading to depression, loss of coordination and seizures. Xylitol has also been linked to acute liver failure in dogs.

Symptoms can develop quickly, as early as 30 minutes after ingestion. However, with smaller amounts of xylitol, symptoms can be delayed by up to 12 hours.

If you think your pet has ingested a product containing xylitol, contact your veterinarian immediately. Prompt treatment is essential for your pet’s health.

Pet owners are reminded to safely store any products that may be dangerous to animals out of the reach of pets.
